1960S FRENCH POP NIGHT – Get your 1960s French pop on at South Shore Tiki Lounge in Kihei with drink specials ($3 Heinekens, $4 Sneaky Tikis and $5 Blue Hawaiians) and DJs Cudra Clover and Toben. HAKUKOLE – As a precursor to Ku Mai Ka Hula 2012, join Keali’i Reichel as he delves into Hakukole: Sayings & Chants of Ridicule, an often overlooked genre of poetry. He will span the topics of infidelity, physical inadequacy, stupidity, bad manners, irritation, sarcasm, dark humor and revenge all of which can be found in this ancient form. Through song, chant, gesture or proverb, Hakukole has played an important role in Hawaii’s past. Come experience authentic exploration from one of Maui’s best storytellers. $13. 7:30pm. WAILUKU FIRST FRIDAY – Time to shut down the streets and celebrate! Yep, it’s First Friday Wailuku Style! Hele on down and share in what the town has to offer. There’s live music performances by Hookena and Ho’omanawanui Apo at the Maui Thing stage, Eric Gilliom at the Wailuku Banyan Tree and more musical guests throughout the evening. THE AFTERMATH OF FUKUSHIMA – Northshore Art and Frame is now presenting “The Aftermath of Fukushima.” Created by Maui resident Gonzo, it’s inspired by the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. On Friday, Gonzo will speak through his art about this and its aftermath that we’re still dealing with. Also featured that night will be Turkish native, Volcan. Volcan says he draws inspiration from his surroundings, which is clearly evident in his macro-style approach to photography. ERIC MCFADDEN – If you’re in the mood to rock out, you might want to check out Eric McFadden this weekend, presented by Milagros Food Company. The former lead guitarist for George Clinton & the P-Funk All-Stars, Joe Strummer and Les Claypool, McFadden will perform in a power trio as lead guitarist and vocalist. Guitar Player Magazine describes him as a “modern Hendrix.” If you’re curious about whether or not he lives up to the hype, you can get tickets online or in person at Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon (Paia), Request Music (Wailuku) and Three’s Bar & Grill (Kihei). KU MAI KA HULA 2012 – Don’t miss out on Maui’s only international adult hula competition. Ku Mai Ka Hula features halaus from Hawaii, Japan and California in a one-of-a kind evening of kupuna, kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (modern) hula. Honoring the history shared by Hawaii and Japan, Ku Mai Ka Hula is the largest adult hula competition and has been around for seven years. THE VINYL FRONTIER – All analog and no laptops. That’s right: these DJs will spin real records. Starting at 10pm and going on until 1am at Casanova, DJ Skinny Guy, DJ Joralien and DJBlast will appear. Get there before 11pm and the cover will be $5, but it rises to $10 after. THE TOASTERS – What do you get when you blend a synthesized 1970s British sound and Manhattan’s Lower East Side punk/rock sound? The Toasters! Originals to the third wave of the ska era, The Toasters are a staple within the Third Wave Ska generation. Known for their songs “Two-Tone Army” and “Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down,” The Toasters have launched a 30th anniversary tour and are coming to Maui. YOGA AID WORLD CHALLENGE – Calling all yogis: you’re cordially invited to the Yoga Aid World Challenge 2012. Enjoy a day that unites yogis around the globe for the greater cause. Come stretch and be of a “single expression of intention” on the grand lawn of Lumeria. The Yoga Aid World Challenge will span from Australia to Hawaii through a series of fundraising events. Maui will feature renown yoga instructors Dominique Pandolfi and Nadia Toraman, amongst others and music by the transformative Kirtan group, Kaliya and Satya OM. CHICKEN WING EATING CONTEST – Fly down to Sharky’s for an old-fashioned chicken wing eating contest. That’s right–it’s Man vs. Chicken Wing in Kihei. MAPA GARDEN PARTY – Calling all MAPA friends and family! It’s time again for the performing arts group’s annual Garden Party, a benefit for MAPA’s educational and performing arts programs. This year the theme is “Celebrate the Arts with MAPA.” The evening will consist of a colorful palette that includes cuisines, beverages, entertainment as well as a silent auction. The menu will feature tastes from Saigon Cafe (garden party shrimp), Cafe O’Lei (kalua pork quesadillas), Duke’s Beach House (shrimp and lobster gazpacho), Waterfront Restaurant (grilled lamb chops and Caesar salad) and much more. FRED SCHREUDERS JAZZ FUSION AND BLUES – This weekend there will be some blues down at Stella Blues Cafe in Kihei. Fred Schreuders, working as a guitarist and vocalist since 1975 but never seeing the spotlight, is finally putting into original music some of his pent-up inspiration. He grew up in Hawaii, and his first instrument was the ukulele, which he picked up at the age of four. Backing him up will be Mike Kennedy on drums and Jay Molina on bass. $5 cover. 7pm-9pm.
